Water softeners make hard water soft. But what does this actually mean?
Well, hard water is caused by the presence of minerals. These hardness-causing calcium and magnesium ions form limescale deposits, leave scum on your surfaces and mean that your water doesn’t lather with soap and detergents.
Some of the UK has extremely hard water and only a few areas have naturally soft water. People that live in hard water areas are all too aware of the problems it causes, especially when it comes to limescale. When heated, the carbonates (magnesium and calcium) form scale in your pipe work, your boiler, and within appliances – just take a look in a kettle and imagine this throughout all of your appliances and household plumbing. These ions, although tiny, actually increase energy bills, shorten the lives of appliances and ultimately cost you money.by
