Water Softeners

Water softeners make hard water soft. But what does this actually mean?

Well, hard water is caused by the presence of minerals. These hardness-causing calcium and magnesium ions form limescale deposits, leave scum on your surfaces and mean that your water doesn’t lather with soap and detergents.

Some of the UK has extremely hard water and only a few areas have naturally soft water. People that live in hard water areas are all too aware of the problems it causes, especially when it comes to limescale. When heated, the carbonates (magnesium and calcium) form scale in your pipe work, your boiler, and within appliances – just take a look in a kettle and imagine this throughout all of your appliances and household plumbing. These ions, although tiny, actually increase energy bills, shorten the lives of appliances and ultimately cost you money.

Arsenic in Water

Posted on: March 25th, 2014 by admin No Comments

It is alarming to think that arsenic may be present in water supplies around the world and that people may be unknowingly ingesting this dangerous chemical. So just what is arsenic and how does arsenic enter the water supply?

What is Arsenic?

Most people will be aware of arsenic as a highly toxic poison, used historically to kill vermin. Due to it being a relatively common household item in the past, it was crime writer Agatha Christie’s second most used poison behind cyanide.

As well as a poison, Arsenic is a natural chemical element that occurs in many minerals and can be found in soil, rocks, rivers and seawater. It is even found naturally in most foods and water but ordinarily, at these levels, causes no harm to human health. Arsenic can be found in nature as a grey metallic substance but usually exists in a chemical compound. Arsenic compounds are manufactured on a commercial basis for use in forming and strengthening alloys and treating timber.
