Water Purification History

Posted on: October 15th, 2014 by admin No Comments

The history of water purification is one that is endlessly fascinating. By studying wider scientific breakthroughs throughout history, you can see how water filtration develops. Initially, filtering water was all about improving the taste. The link between water and disease had not yet been discovered. With the discovery of waterborne diseases, the focus soon shifted to methods of water purification where harmful microbes could be removed from the water supply. Today, technology has moved on so much that through a combination of ultra-fine filters and ion exchange units, people can now enjoy water that is 98-99% pure in their own home. The interactive timeline below charts the history of water purification.

Oestrogen in Water

Posted on: July 16th, 2014 by admin No Comments

There are a number of pollutants and contaminants in our drinking water supply that we are all too aware of here at Aquatec. We make it a priority to keep up to date with reports on potential pollutants making their way into the UK water supply to ensure that our whole house filtration units capture all harmful contaminants to deliver you pure water with its numerous benefits.

An alarming report based on official research on the effects of oestrogen in rivers on fish revealed that around half of the male fish in the UK’s lowland rivers had changed sex. It is understood that a synthetic oestrogen hormone was behind these alarming changes. The implication is that people in the UK could be consuming oestrogen in tap water that has potentially damaging affects on male fertility.

Chlorine in Water

Posted on: November 18th, 2013 by admin

Chlorine has been added to the UK’s water supply for over a hundred years now. This is because chlorine in water is the most effective way of killing bacteria that could do you harm but does this mean that we should have to drink it in our tap water?

chlorine in uk tap water

Once chlorine has killed the harmful germs in transit to our homes, it offers no further benefits. In fact it tastes and smells bad and is bad for your health and well-being. So should we still consume it, absorb it and suffer from its negative effects? At Aquatec – the Pure Water People we don’t think so and that’s why we remove chlorine from your water supply with our whole house water purification systems. This article explores why we remove chlorine from water:

Why is Chlorine added to Water?

Chlorine is a disinfectant and is added to the UK water supply to kill bacteria and dangerous micro-organisms that have the potential to cause diseases. The chlorine kills these harmful pollutants by damaging their cell structure.

Fluoride in Water

Fluoride in Water: Good or Bad?

There is big debate as to whether fluoride in the water is good or bad for your health and if it should be introduced to the UK water supply. It is an issue that we have followed closely because any changes to water supply affect us all.

Fluoride can be found in the water supply in some parts of the UK. In fact around half a million people in the UK receive water into their homes which has fluoride in it naturally. The amount of fluoride in the water supply varies depending on whereabouts in the UK you live. However, 5.5 million people receive water that has had fluoride added and this figure may be increased as the government and local councils continue to debate whether fluoride should be added to the water supply. The government recommends that fluoride should be added to the water in areas where the amount of naturally occurring fluoride is low.

Natural Water Purification

Posted on: September 6th, 2011 by admin No Comments

Water treatment is becoming a growing concern with the proliferation of the world population and the rise of chemicals and toxicants in the water.

There are some places on the earth that benefit from natural water filtration thanks to geographical properties. Among them is the Caribbean island of Barbados which is made out of coralstone – a perfect natural water filter.

Drinking water in Barbados has been among the best in the world (and is one of the factors which leads to their excellent rum production) because it all filters through the coral into underground reservoirs.

Natural Water Purification in Barbados

Barbados Has Natural Water Filtration

Scientists have studied this natural water purification process, hoping to adapt it and use it for water filtration in other parts of the world that are not so lucky as to have great water and great rum.

This groundwater system, known as a karst aquifer, allows water to percolates through porous limestone collect in underground traps. To avoid the contamination of water that occurs from fertilisers and other harmful chemicals, they aim to mimic this process by aping the cracks in the rock that cause the filtration. Using complex techniques they can now model these cracks and recreate them to create safe, pure drinking water for everyone.

At Aquatec, our water purification systems provide those not fortunate enough to live in Barbados with 98 – 99% pure water for your entire household – find out more about our water filtration process and how it makes our customers happy.
