How Hard Water Affects Your Skin and Hair

Hard water = leaves residue Soft water = rinses clean

Hard water isn’t harmful to drink, but it can have a noticeable impact on your skin and hair. The minerals dissolved in hard water, mainly calcium and magnesium, react with soap, shampoo, and cleansers to form a residue that’s difficult to rinse away.

This film of soap scum can block pores, dry out the skin, and leave hair looking dull or lifeless. Over time, these effects can be more than cosmetic, they can influence the health and comfort of your skin and scalp.

Signs hard water may be affecting your skin and hair

Skin feels tight after showering

Hair feels dull or heavy even after washing

Soap or shower gel doesn’t lather well

You need more shampoo or conditioner than expected

What Happens to Your Skin

When washing with hard water, the minerals interfere with your skin’s natural barrier. Instead of rinsing clean, soap combines with calcium and magnesium to leave a fine residue that clings to the surface.

That means:
Dryness and irritation – Hard water strips away natural oils, leaving skin tight, itchy, or flaky.
Blocked pores – The residue can trap bacteria and dead skin cells, worsening conditions like acne or eczema.
Increased sensitivity – Without its protective moisture layer, skin can become more reactive to temperature, friction, and skincare products.

Soft, conditioned water rinses completely clean, helping the skin retain its natural moisture balance.

What Happens to Your Hair

Hair reacts in much the same way. The minerals in hard water form tiny deposits on each strand, weighing it down and preventing moisture from penetrating the cuticle.

This leads to:
Dullness and lack of shine – Mineral build-up scatters light and makes hair look flat.
Tangled, brittle strands – The rough coating increases friction, making hair harder to brush or style.
Faded colour – If you colour your hair, hard water can accelerate fading and dull your results.

By contrast, soft water allows shampoos and conditioners to work properly, helping hair stay clean, shiny, and manageable.

The Science Behind It

When calcium and magnesium ions in hard water react with fatty acids in soap, they form calcium stearate, the insoluble film responsible for residue and irritation. Softened water replaces these minerals with sodium ions, which don’t form the same compounds. Without calcium and magnesium present, soaps and shampoos can lather properly and rinse away fully.
This helps your skin retain its natural moisture and allows your hair to feel lighter, smoother, and easier to manage after every wash.

Calcium stearate

What this means for your skin

This residue can sit on the surface of your skin and interfere with its natural moisture balance.

As a result, skin may feel:
Dry or tight after washing
Slightly irritated or sensitive
Less able to absorb moisturisers effectively

Over time, this can make everyday skincare feel less effective, even when you are using good-quality products.

What this means for your hair

On your hair, the same mineral build-up can coat each strand.

This can lead to:
Hair looking dull rather than shiny
A rough or coarse texture
Increased tangling and difficulty styling
Faster fading of coloured hair

It can also make shampoos and conditioners less effective, meaning you may need to use more product to achieve the same result.

How Chlorine affects your skin

chlorine is added to tap water across the UK to ensure it is safe to drink by disinfecting it, typically at low levels of 0.5 mg/l or less. Chlorine also affects the skin by stripping natural oils. This is something that is usually associated with swimming in swimming pools, where chlorine is used disinfect the water – but it also affects the skin through showering and bathing. The heat of the water actually opens your pores, meaning chorine can seep into your skin more easily.

What our customers say about the benefits to their skin and hair

"When I got out of the shower my skin was quite dry especially like around my nose area was cracking". After the softener was installed, "I didn't have any dry skin patches like on my chin or my forehead."

Antoinette observed that their young child "started getting eczema patches," but once the system was in place, "the eczema had cleared up and she was a lot happier having a shower".

“I noticed a change in my hair straight away like it was a lot more bouncier, it wasn't dry and crackly anymore"

“I'm using a lot less of my products they're quite expensive so I really hate having to use a lot and having such thick hair before the water and softener I would be using like maybe one two three handfuls now I'm using less than a handful.”
"Within a few days you start noticing the difference to your skin like your Skin's not dry anymore" "kind of like bathing in silk" because the water feels significantly softer on the body.
“It's cut down on any shower products, you’ll need hardly any shampoo.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Hard water can contribute to dry skin. The minerals in hard water react with soaps and cleansers, leaving a residue on the skin that can interfere with its natural moisture barrier. This can make skin feel tight, dry, or irritated after washing.
Hard water does not damage hair in the same way as heat or chemicals, but it can affect how your hair looks and feels. Mineral build-up can leave hair looking dull, feeling rough, and more prone to tangling. It can also make it harder for conditioners to work effectively.
Hard water can make symptoms of sensitive skin conditions, including eczema, feel worse for some people. The residue left behind after washing may contribute to dryness and irritation. Many people find their skin feels more comfortable when washing with softened water.
A water softener removes the minerals that cause residue, allowing soaps and shampoos to rinse away properly. Many people notice softer-feeling skin, improved hydration, and smoother, more manageable hair after switching to softened water.
Soft water does not make your hair greasy, but it can feel different at first. Because there is no mineral residue, hair may feel smoother or silkier after washing. Some people find they need to use slightly less shampoo or conditioner to get the best results.
If your shampoo does not lather well, hard water could be the reason. The minerals in hard water reduce the effectiveness of cleansing products, meaning you often need to use more to create a lather.
Common signs of hard water include:
Limescale on taps, kettles, or shower screens
Soap that does not lather easily
Dry skin after washing
Hair that feels dull or difficult to manage
If you notice several of these, your home is likely to have hard water.
